The consultation on the proposal to expand Minster-in-Sheppey CE Primary School ended on 12 December 2016.  The outcome of the consultation was reported to Education and Young People’s Cabinet Committee on 1 February 2017.  Mr Roger Gough, Cabinet Member for Education and Health Reform, having considered the recommendation from Cabinet Committee and the responses to the consultation agreed the allocation of the capital funding from the Education and Young People’s Service Capital budget to provide additional accommodation for the school to expand.

The Regional Schools Commissioner on behalf of the Secretary of State has also approved the Island Learning Trust’s request to expand Minster-in-Sheppey Primary (Academy) School and increase the Published Admission Number from 60 to 90 for Year R entry in September 2017.

Original Text:

Proposed increase of admission number and school capacity

The County Council is the Strategic Commissioner of Education Provision in Kent and has a duty to ensure that sufficient school places are available to meet demand.  The Commissioning Plan for Education Provision in Kent sets out Kent’s commissioning intentions and is revised annually.  The 2016-20 edition was approved by full Cabinet in March 2016.  The Plan forecasts an increase in the demand for primary school places across Swale district and in particular on the Isle of Sheppey.

The local authority is therefore looking to commission additional primary school places at Minster-in-Sheppey Primary School and has asked the school to operate 3 classes per year group. This proposal will increase the capacity of the school by 90 places and permanently increase the admission number from 60 to 90 for Year R entry in September 2017 and subsequent years.

The consultation period takes place from 14 November to 12 December 2016.  Following the consultation, the full governing body and academy trustees will consider all views expressed and then make a decision on how to proceed.  If the agreement is to continue with the proposal, then approval will be sought from the Regional Schools Commissioner.

Information about the proposal can be found in the 'Consultation Documents' section below.
