We would like to thank all those who took time to help us with the decision as to whether upgrade footpath AW306, Kingsnorth. Results of the survey are as follows:
Of those supporting, many cited reasons as improved access to the school and wider countryside, provision of a route for all abilities and one that would encourage cycling. Some residents requested links through to Ruffetts Wood and Kestrel Close which unfortunately will not be achievable as these areas are not within the ownership of either KCC or Ashford Borough Council.
Those objecting cited that the route would not assist those going to school, would be a haven for criminals and was a loss of green space. Residents were also concerned that vehicles and motorbikes would also use the route.
Kent Police had been consulted and concluded that as there was already a route available here, changes to the levels of crime were unlikely. We will be installing a number of gates along the route to deter speeding and prevent vehicular access. A new hedge will be planted along the frontage of Kestrel Close as mitigation for any loss of habitat.
We hosted a Members Regulation Panel, who considered the case and resolved that a public bridleway be created as proposed. We will therefore endeavour to establish the route taking in to consideration the concerns raised.
Thank you once again for your feedback. As the project progresses updates will be made available.
We are seeking agreement with local landowners to upgrade the existing public footpath (shown on the plan) to that of public bridleway status. The existing public footpath runs through land owned by both the County Council and Ashford Borough Council.
The reason we want to make the upgrade is to facilitate a traffic-free cycling route to Furley Park school, whilst also providing an all weather surface and bridge suitable for both pushchairs and wheelchairs. Funding has been secured and there would be no additional expense to either County or Borough Councils.
This consultation is to find out whether local residents would supportupgrading the legal status of the path to that of bridleway, so as it may be used as a traffic free cycle route to school.
This consultation has now closed.
